The structure of the text is articulated on three levels of understanding, from the symbolic game of the child to the data of reality, progressing through successive windows of deepening; to do this the pop-up technique was used.Playing under the kitchen table Lilo and Lila lead the children to a simple discovery – but much more technical and complete than it seems – of the 5 elements that identify the opera house: the curtain, the scenography, the costumes, the makeup, the orchestra pit.The illustrations that tell the game in the kitchen of Lilo and Lila open (literally) on the illustrations that show the same actions on the stage of the theater; in turn, these open on photos of the beautiful Teatro Comunale of Ferrara, inside which the two protagonists continue to move. The end of the book opens as a real stage, with audience, orchestra, a prince and a princess galloping away on a white horse; the whole family runs to see the show.
Valeria Gasparrini conceived the project together with Marilisa Calò (screenwriter and director), who wrote the lyrics. He gave shape to the project, defining the pop-up window structure and the mechanics of the construction of the final theater. He conceived and realized illustrations and montages between illustrations and photographs.
The other authors of this book are Davie Zanni, set designer-engineer and Antonio Andronico, actor and director. The advice of an elementary teacher and a musician was requested, and the book has already been used by an elementary class for a year-long work on the theatre, at the end of which the class went to attend a real show.
To date the book has sold more than 7,500 copies.
