Rule and δαίμων
Valeria Gasparrini presents in this exhibition – small but dense – a selection of works that have a depth not suspected to the impatient look that characterizes our exploration of much of the aesthetic space.
Depth – one would think – of concepts and implications but this, while true, is a somewhat predictable adjective within a presentation.
Depth of interior structure, of formal genesis, of the evolution of language in direct contact with life: this is a meaning closer to Valeria’s proposal
Meanwhile, we clear the field from the presence of that Greek lemma that creates stumbling … hurry.
The Dèmone, of immense pervasiveness in modern culture (and psychological in particular. The most pertinent reference is to James Hillman) offers itself here as an interpretative path to bind all the images. To be understood as an inner attitude-guide, with a strong attractiveness, which directs – just like gravity – the free flow of personal choices. Valeria Gasparrini elaborates different types of δαίμων, all included in the soul (her but also ours…): the brutal reactive regurgitation or the ability to dominate and shape what is approaching us, the lightness of freedom that does not weigh on any other, the self-inhibition or even the stalemate of when the inner forces cancel or do not present themselves at the call. Each path takes place through multiple printing tests (practically monotypes) that try to give chromatic and beauty evidence (word to start using again…) to this inner sounding. Valeria is a professional illustrator; as an artist she frees herself from the predictability of certain conventions but remains a narrator, so it is important to hear, behind the engraved forms, also the word of an interview that was, in the first place, an awareness of herself. The artist’s professional history, in fact, is varied in the sense of “rich” and includes both the literary and – opposite – the visceral materiality of sculpture and ceramics. For a happy gift of fate he knew the art of engraving that allows him to have a “very physical” relationship with matrices, colors, papers and printing procedures but, at the same time, has the lightness of the pure image, without apparent thickness (in fact, the depth is all in the process…).
One last remark very significant of his way of proceeding. From the practice of graphics Valeria has naturally become familiar with electronic programs that offer endless variations in the course of work and stimulate, then to the appropriation of the random fruit of the creative process. Valeria recreates – all in artisanal form – this same “probabilistic” path precisely in the numerous tests of printing, voluntarily varied in color or position on paper, creating real suites that offer a mobile frame to his narratives.
